As the summer winds down, parents have begun preparing their kids to head back to school; every store is stocked with pencils, erasers, calculators and myriad other supplies to assist in a year full of learning.
For many families, this year may be their child’s first year at a new school. Whether you’ve moved for family, work, the military or are just sending your first little one off to Kindergarten, you may be wondering about the new school district your children will be attending. One of the fastest growing areas of Hampton Roads is here in the Hickory section of Chesapeake, Virginia. With new family-friendly communities being built such as Hickory Landing at Edinburgh, many newcomers are faced with learning about a whole new school or even a new district.
Students living in the Hickory Landing at Edinburgh neighborhood will attend Hickory Elementary, Hickory Middle and Hickory High Schools. Surrounding neighborhoods in the Hickory area of Chesapeake will attend either Hickory or Southeastern Elementary School, Hickory Middle School, and Hickory or Grassfield High School. School district maps and contact information can be found on the Chesapeake Public Schools website.
All of these schools have won a variety of statewide education awards over the years. See box below for a list of awards.*
In addition to many state-wide awards, the Chesapeake Public School system offers students a variety of academic opportunities including the Governor’s STEM Academy and the Science & Medicine Academy as well as a Gifted Education Program.
And to make it all even better, all of these schools are in close proximity to each other - Hickory Middle and High School stand right next to each other, with Hickory Elementary and Southeastern shortly down the road and Grassfield High just to the west. So no matter where your kids are going or how many kids you have in different grades, running them to and from school and special activities is convenient, especially from some of the new, centrally located housing communities, which sit close to the entrance to the 168-Bypass, the city’s main artery.
